The American - Alexandros Papadiamantis Short Story (1891)

The main character of this story is a Greek migrant who following 25 years of absence returns back to his island but no one recognizes him. He wonders on his own alongside the port, the island’s alleys and faces his family house ruins. Only love makes him still hope: the hope that his beloved woman perhaps is still there waiting for him. Just like Odysseus, who came back in order to meet his lost Ithaca into the eyes of the faithful Penelope.
